Serbian Orthodox Funeral Director for over 30 years
Losing a loved one is a very difficult time for anybody, at Orthodox Funerals we understand the hardships of grief and arranging a funeral at the same time. This is why we have created a guide to arranging a Serbian Orthodox Funeral to help you with the first steps when a loved one has passed away:
1. Contact Orthodox Funeral Services
When a family member has passed away it is imperative that you firstly call Orthodox Funeral Directors on 1300 211 700 as we will arrange for the deceased person to be picked up as soon as possible and then be transported directly to our mortuary, where they will be looked after in preparation for their burial.
We will make sure to wash, dress and prepare your departed loved one in accordance with the Serbian Orthodox Church guidelines and the NSW Health guidelines and regulations. If your loved one will be repatriated overseas to Serbia, Croatia or Bosnia & Herzegovina, our mortuary specialist will need to conduct the process of embalming.
By specialising in Serbian Orthodox Funerals our experienced staff will be able to liase with you further on funeral costs and the inclusions and extras which you may be after such as: casket/coffin, flowers, transportation, memorial books, candles, photography and more.

2. Purchase a burial plot.
The practice of a burial is traditionally a Serbian Orthodox Funeral custom and is the recommended funeral option by the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Serbian Orthodox Patriarch. In order to arrange a funeral it is important to have the cemetery decided on and the grave/burial plot purchased, whether it is a local funeral in the greater Sydney and NSW region or in the other states and territories such as Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart or overseas.
If you are looking to purchase a burial plot, call us directly on 1300 211 700 and we can assist with connecting you with the correct cemetery contacts and provide you with the information and estimated pricing you can expect. Alternatively, you can visit our directory for all the local cemeteries and contact phone numbers and call the cemetery staff directly.
You will also have to decide whether you would like to hold a Church service followed by a graveside service for your loved one, or only a graveside service. If the deceased person was Baptised in the Serbian Orthodox Church it is recommended to arrange a Church Service and a graveside service and our Orthodox Funeral Directors will arrange that for you.
3. Organise the Church Service.
If your loved one was Baptised within the Serbian Orthodox Church, we recommend holding a Funeral Church Service, by your local parish priest, or a priest and Church of your choice. We have been arranging Serbian Orthodox Funerals for over 30 years and personally know and work with all the Orthodox priests in Sydney, NSW and Australia. If you may not know a priest personally, we are more than happy to contact them on your behalf and schedule in the Funeral Church Service for you.
For the Church service it is important to prepare: žito (koljivo), pogača, wine, candles, cross, picture and memorial cards/books. Our Orthodox Funeral Director will help you arrange all of this when they meet with you directly to arrange the funeral. Please view our list of NSW Serbian Orthodox Churches below
4. Book in Catering Services.
In most cases, because many family members and friends attend the funeral of a loved one, the family of the deceased like to arrange catering services for their guests. The food is usually prepared and served either at the graveside or at a hall after the graveside service.
We have longstanding relationships with Serbian and other catering companies which we can recommend and who will offer tailored prices and menus for your needs.
5. Arrange Repatriation Logistics.
Our Funeral Directors are the only recommended funeral company for sending a loved one who has passed away, to their motherland. We have Orthodox Funeral offices and staff located all across the world, including Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, who we directly work with for repatriations.
When we arrange a repatriation, we book the flights and arrange all the transportation for you (to and from the airport, to the funeral director, Church or grave overseas). As experts in repatriation services, we will make sure to arrange everything for you, so that the process is stress free and everything is conducted as smoothly as possible.
These are some of the steps you can expect to take when arranging a funeral and rest assured that we can help you with all of them, and all the other processes along the way. Your family will be supported, guided and cared for from the moment you contact us and we promise to relieve the burden and stress of arranging a funeral for you. Our staff will also discuss all the Serbian Orthodox Funeral customs and traditions with you, so that you can consider upholding them for your loved one’s funeral.
